LOT DETAILS

Materials:

oil on canvas, transferred from panel

Size Notes:

canvas: 18 ? by 13 in.; 46.7 by 33.7 cm.

Edition:

The composition appears to have been transferred from panel to canvas. The canvas is lined and taut on its stretcher. The image reads well through the varnish, with canvas weave slightly visible throughout. A pinprick of loss is visible in the red skirt, and an earlier craquelure line (now stable) is visible on the baby Jesus's face, but is not distracting. Under UV inspection, recent retouching is not readily visible, but an older, quite extensive campaign of retouching, possibly when the image was transferred, is visible, particularly in the flesh tones of the figures. Nonetheless the painting can hang in its present state. Offered in a decoratively painted giltwood frame.
